Pemberley state of mind

“Miss Darcy was tall, and on a larger scale than Elizabeth; and, though little more than sixteen, her figure was formed, and her appearance womanly and graceful. She was less handsome than her brother; but there was sense and good humour in her face, and her manners were perfectly unassuming and gentle. Elizabeth, who had expected to find in her as acute and unembarrassed an observer as ever Mr. Darcy had been, was much relieved by discerning such different feelings.”
(“Pride and prejudice”, Chapter 44)

“But above all, above respect and esteem, there was a motive within her of goodwill which could not be overlooked. It was gratitude; gratitude, not merely for having once loved her, but for loving her still well enough to forgive all the petulance and acrimony of her manner in rejecting him, and all the unjust accusations accompanying her rejection.”

“Quite an obvious choice to dress Georgiana in white but…This is the first acting she´d ever done. I think she´s quite genuine, Tamzin, she´s a really honest person and, like a lot of honest people, she can see others honestly. And it was that quality that made me cast her. She´s really like that. She is only 15”.

Georgiana

“And now Georgiana, who we’ve had built up by Caroline Bingley, as this woman of great culture and sophistication, and the rightful bride of her brother, Mr. Bingley, is revealed to be a child.”

(Joe Wright, Director)

Lizzie: What a beautiful pianoforte. Georgiana: My brother gave it to me. (smiles at him) He shouldn’t have. Darcy: Yes I should. Georgiana: Oh very well then. Darcy: She’s easily persuaded, is she not? Lizzie: Your unfortunate brother once had to put up with my playing for a whole evening. (Georgiana turns huge innocent eyes upon Lizzie). Georgiana: But he says you play so well! (Lizzie, astounded, looks at Darcy, who gives a small, rather sweet shrug). Lizzie: Then he has perjured himself most profoundly. (Darcy laughs). Darcy: I said played “quite well”. Lizzie: Quite well is not very well. I am satisfied. (Georgiana looks between them, intrigued and aware, instinctively, of the enormous attraction between them. Darcy notices and makes an effort to be normal).

(Original script)

Georgiana Darcy: My brother has told me so much about you, I feel as if we are friends already.

(And her brother Fitzwilliam is thinking: “I wish the earth would swallow me up!” while Lizzie is amazed).

OMG he´s at home !

“Darcy is a young man who has bad social skills and huge responsibility. His parents died and left him with a massive estate and a younger sister to take care of. And I think he had to grow up too fast”.

Another Jane Austen fan realising a dream by participating in the film is Tamzin Merchant. She was cast as Georgiana, Darcy’s sister, after writing a letter to the casting director and explaining how she was perfect for the part. After meetings, Tamzin was indeed offered the role, even though she had no previous acting experience. The novice threw herself into the work, even learning to play the piano selections that Georgiana would be playing on-screen.
